Whales 3 - What we’ve been up to!

For the past four days we have been sailing to cape cod. We have learned knots, lines, how to navigate, and how to steer Lady Maryland.  We sailed through Stellwagen bank where we saw many types of whales swim and dive. We used books and pictures to help us identify them.  We stopped and docked at Provincetown to learn more about whales and whale entanglement from people who work to prevent it.

Every day, we have been helping set up for breakfast, lunch and dinner and wash the dishes afterwards. The students were split up into two groups: port and starboard.  The groups alternate between jobs.  While one group is on deck watch the other is in charge of cleaning the sleeping area.

Every student is required to wear a life jacket while underway in the morning and the night. During the night, students take turn doing boat checks in pairs, while others sleep.  The boat is either dock or anchored in calm water at night.  In the morning after washing up we resume alternating between jobs.

Yesterday, June 18th, there was a swim call where we get to rinse in the water in bathing suits. We also watched a movie and received hot chocolate which made up for the wet and humid day. So far, the trip has been very fun.
