Sleeping on deck is like being tucked under a starry blanket with the cool salty breeze. The temperature change between night and day is very contrasting that we all woke up with scratchy morning voices. After breakfast, Becca lead us to look over a case study of the laws of the international waters near the limit of Canada’s control. In summary, Spanish fleets were fishing giant amounts of fish near the border of Canada’s waters and Canadian fleets shot a bullet to serve as a warning. We created cohesive arguments to determine who was in the wrong. The activity was a bit challenging because it involved balancing the importance of culture, values, and following the international law and to what extent the law should be enforced. Today was a great day of critical thinking because we were mapping ideas of tragedy of the commons, contemplating hypothetical questions, and discussing Singer’s solution to world poverty.
Then we went to visit the Oceanic Alliance research building, where we looked at cool, new gear and got to pipette and virTual reality in their robotics lab. Then we learned about Lady Maryland focusing on ropes. We learned that sailors use different knots like pins, bits, and cleats to utilize friction on ropes.
