Wow! It's hard to believe that we have only been on board Lady Maryland for 24 hours. We have already learned so much! Yesterday morning we boarded the ship in Buzzard's Bay, Massachusetts. The crew immediately put us to work sailing Lady Maryland through the Cape Cod Canal. We took our first classes on deck with the Whales Educator, Steven, and enjoyed two excellent meals cooked by the Chef, Michael. In the afternoon, we encountered a bit of rain, so we put on our "foulies" (foul weather gear)! Luckily, Captain Sara did a great job of navigating us around the storm, so we didn't really need the foulies. While on watch, Erik and Kate spotted the first whale of the trip! The humpback had disappeared into the Salty water by the time the rest of the cadets could see, but we are going on our first official whale watch in Stellwagen Bank today. It's likely that we will see some whales or other cetaceans there.
We anchored Lady Maryland just outside of Provincetown where we successfully completed our first night watch. Each person on board the ship takes a one-hour turn watching the ship from on deck while the rest of the crew sleeps. Waking up in the middle of the night was not as bad as it sounds - we got to experience the ship in complete silence for the first time! The view of Provincetown from the water was also gorgeous.
Make sure to check back soon to hear about our whale watch and other adventures (and maybe even some pictures)! Sending lots of love to our families and friends, from CTY Whales 2.
