July 6, 2014 (Trip 1, Day 7)

What an amazing day on Cape Cod! The weather the past two days after the storm has been absolutely perfect and it really feels like the height of summer up here. Today the whole group went on a whale watching adventure where we saw about 40 Humpback whales and about 150 Striped dolphins, numbers that are rarely seen in one trip! It was amazing to see the bubble feeding and the unique behaviors we've learned about be put into action. Yesterday we went to another whaling museum and the Seaman's Bethel, a non- denominational chapel for sailors and a landmark for whaling history. Before leaving New Bedford, MA last night, the group was treated to a tour of  the historic schooner Ernestina and after trawling again out in Buzzard's Bay we watched a delayed firework show complete with glowsticks and singing our own patriotic soundtrack.

Here are a few more photos of the students up on Long Island and in New England!

On the Charles W. Morgan, a famous whaling ship which they had learned about earlier at the whaling museum. This was an unexpected treat, made possible by the storm!

July 4 2014 (Trip 1, Day 5)

Happy 4th of July! This morning we sailed through the rain - we are about to tour a historic whaling ship, one which we learned about at the Cold Spring Harbor whaling museum. We are tied up and secure, waiting out the storm. Everyone is safe and sound and celebrating the holiday through the lens of America's rich maritime history. More to follow - and photos too!

Weather Update

Good Morning families!
Lisa, Director of Shipboard Education here - I just wanted to give you an update on the group considering the weather forecast.  Everyone is fine!!!  The group enjoyed some time ashore yesterday at the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum in New York, then got underway to head up the Long Island Sound.  Yesterday we made arrangements to be at a very secure and very protected dock to ride out the storm.  When Captain Michael called the Dock Master to inquire about the space he was assured that we'd have the safest docking spot in the harbor, much to the dismay of several local fishermen who were vying for the same spot!  Lady Maryland will be securely located at that dock by late morning.  The crew intends to keep the group busy with lots of learning and fun as they let Arthur pass.  Once the storm has moved out of the area later this weekend, the boat will get back to it's regularly scheduled program.  Enjoy your holiday!

July 2, 2014 ( Trip 1, Day 3)

This morning we ate breakfast sailing past the Statue of Liberty after rolling up the coast of New Jersey through last night. The scenery is quite different than the open Atlantic of yesterday but it gave the students some calm shallower waters to learn about trawling - both the environmental dangers and the educational benefits that it can create. They pulled up lots of mussels, jellies, a few small fish and even a hermit crab. The students also worked with the crew before lunch on learning the Coast Guard safety guidelines specific to Lady Maryland and how we would respond in case of an emergency. The weather conditions are still hot and sunny which make for a good day out on the water!

Photos to follow!

July 1, 2014 (Trip 1, Day 2)

Hello from the Lady Maryland! We've been practicing navigation skills, learning about the parts of the boat and what it's like to both live and work aboard here. The meals have been delicious thanks to our cook and the weather has been clear, even if the waves have been a bit rough on our stomachs. Everyone seems to be really coming into their own, with the help of amazing instructors and the Lady Maryland crew. We're looking forward to the next part of the trip and are excited to learn more about whales, estuaries and life at sea!
