July 2, 2014 ( Trip 1, Day 3)

This morning we ate breakfast sailing past the Statue of Liberty after rolling up the coast of New Jersey through last night. The scenery is quite different than the open Atlantic of yesterday but it gave the students some calm shallower waters to learn about trawling - both the environmental dangers and the educational benefits that it can create. They pulled up lots of mussels, jellies, a few small fish and even a hermit crab. The students also worked with the crew before lunch on learning the Coast Guard safety guidelines specific to Lady Maryland and how we would respond in case of an emergency. The weather conditions are still hot and sunny which make for a good day out on the water!
