Underway!

Hello from day four of our CTY voyage! The Lady Maryland sailed all throughout the day with the help of your students, who did everything from raising sails to dropping the anchor. We have plenty of photos to go along with Savannah's terrific overview of our past couple days, so be on the lookout for your student keeping the ship afloat in a sundry of ways. Enjoy and be sure to stay tuned!

Day 3-Today we had a lot on our plate including having to sail and do a few things on shore. When we were woken up this morning we were met by the smell of oatmeal. After breakfast we jumped into Swamp Fox (our small motorboat) to get to land from the boat since we were anchored. On land we went to the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown to listen and take notes to a presentation about whale entanglements. There we learned about Spinnaker, a whale who died from multiple entanglements including one that cut through her upper jaw. PS it is hard to balance on steady land after being on a boat for 3 days. Next we rode Swamp Fox back to the boat and took up anchor. As we sailed it began to rain which meant that we had to lower the sails and be on deck getting soaking wet. We also had to eat our soup downstairs were everyone was feeling sick from the motion. We sailed for a while before we ran into a upside down surf board. We immediately called the Coast Guard and told them where we are so they could check if a human was on the surfboard. Soon it stopped raining and we were able to sail and then anchored.
Day 4- Today we we woke up and ate so much that we could kill a horse. I'm on Port Watch so I had class first, there we learned about estuaries and plankton. Next we had lunch which was curry rice and chicken. After lunch Port Watch had Deck Watch which is always fun. Today I got the helm first and this was my first time at the helm with the sails set, I have taken the helm with the engine on, so that was awesome. We got to anchor really early so we ate dinner anchored. After dinner we had both watches, Port and Starboard, in class together beginning research for our final project. I finished my research because my topic of "Whale Migration and Effects" was really cool.
