Today was the the first day underway for our second Whales and Estuary group. After spending the night in Salem (often referred to by locals as "Witch City") students boarded the boat early in the morning for orientation. Safety procedures, navigation, nautical terminology, and the operations of how to sail the ship were just a few of the learning experiences students had aboard the Lady Maryland this morning.
Once we were underway students had the oppertunity to: haul up the sails, steer the ship, stand lookout, and trawl the bottom of the the bay. On our first day students experimented with the different properties of salt and fresh water, and got to experience trawling for lobsters.
Check the blog in the coming days for more information on our adventures and experiences!
