Sorry for the delay in posting, but the last two days were filled with so much fun that there hardly was any spare time. Thursday morning, Lady Maryland set sailed and continued along the coast of Connecticut.
In the afternoon the cadets got to participate in some hands on field work as the weather was beautiful and the winds not too strong – the captain gave a green for trawl fishing! The youngest cadet was chosen to bestow good luck on the trawl net by giving it a good sniff and all the cadets threw in the net shortly after.
And indeed what a lucky net it was: the cadets caught spider crabs, hermit crabs, shrimp, and even a baby flounder! All the organisms were separated into buckets by species and the cadets were divided into groups to count, identify, and measure all the animals of the catch. After a group discussion of the findings, all the organisms were safely returned back to the sea.
By evening, morale was a little down as the hard work of watches, cleaning the boat, and doing scientific fieldwork was catching up with the cadets' energy levels. But several rounds of Pictionary and Charades got their energy levels back up again that they had a hard time falling asleep. What a fun way to learn and test out marine science and nautical terms!
That night, while the cadets were fast asleep, the crew navigated Lady Maryland along the coast of Rhode Island on the way to Massachusetts.
